The right binoculars or scope for every moment

Whether you go bird watching in the early morning, go on safari in Africa or enjoy the stars, there is a best binoculars or scope for every moment! At Kamera Express you will always find what you need: from small binoculars to microscopes and from thermal imaging camera to rangefinder. Are you already getting the images closer?

Different types of binoculars and their applications

Buying binoculars starts with choosing the right type. Most and best-known binoculars are binoculars. These binoculars have two equal viewers side by side and you can see through them with two eyes. Opposite this is the monocular, also called monocular. You probably guessed it, these binoculars have only one pair of binoculars and so you view with one eye.

Within binocular binoculars, a distinction is made between roof prism binoculars and porro binoculars. The main difference between these two types is size. Roof prism binoculars let light through in a straight line, making them compact and straight in shape, making them ideal for travelling or safari. Porro binoculars allow light to pass through parallel prisms and are therefore often a bit larger, but have more depth perception.

Types of binoculars at a glance

There are binoculars to suit every use. These are the most well-known and their uses:

  • Monoculars - Monoculars are compact binoculars for one eye. Ideal if you travel light or want to quickly spot something in the distance. Because you only use one eye, the image is less spatial than binoculars, but the advantage is in their light weight, simplicity and small size. Binoculars with night vision or distance measurement are also available.
  • Night vision binoculars - Would you like to be able to see in the dark? Night vision binoculars allow you to see everything around you in the dark, from animals and plants to people, while without them you can't see anything at all. This is possible because the binoculars amplify the residual light from the moon and stars. Night vision binoculars with Infrared give an even better view of your subject thanks to the infrared light.
  • Rangefinder - As the name suggests, a rangefinder measures the distance to a distant object. This way of measuring saves a lot of time for photographers who want to be sure which lens to use with the subject. There are different types of rangefinders, the main differences being measuring with a laser or ultrasonic.
  • Thermal imaging cameras - A thermal imaging camera does not visualise light, but heat. Anything with a temperature above absolute zero emits infrared heat. That radiation is converted to an image, allowing you to see people, animals or objects based on temperature differences. Ideal for observations in complete darkness, in fog or through bushes. This scope is widely used in wildlife spotting, security and search operations.

Binoculars magnification

Magnification determines how close you see an object. For example, 8x42 Binoculars magnify 8 times and have a lens diameter of 42 mm. That lens diameter is at least as important as the magnification itself: the larger the diameter, the more light the binoculars catch.

More light means brighter images, especially at dusk, overcast weather or in shaded areas such as forests. This allows you to see sharp images through binoculars even in lower light conditions. High light output also makes viewing less tiring for your eyes and allows you to see more details and colours - ideal for birdwatching or wildlife watching.

Common magnifications:

  • 8x42 - All-round model, perfect for birdwatching.
  • 10x42 - Larger magnification, suitable for wildlife and nature.
  • 7x50 - Extra bright, ideal for twilight or at sea.
  • 10x50 - Lots of detail, good for astronomical use.

From binoculars to scope

A scope is no ordinary binoculars: it is a powerful magnifier, often with Tripod, for longer observations. Think of a spotting scope for birds, a telescope for stargazing or a microscope for scientific research.

Types of scopes

  • Spotting scope - A spotting scope is just in between binoculars and a telescope. It has more magnification than binoculars, but is easier to carry around than a telescope. In addition, you can swap eyepieces, the lenses of binoculars, which also allows you to adjust the magnification yourself.
  • Telescope or stargazer - A telescope allows you to view beautiful constellations. Stargazers vastly improve the number of stars you see, their brightness and their structure! Choose a quiet, less well-exposed spot and you can see everything even better.
  • Microscope - A microscope also magnifies images, although this involves magnifying very small images to images that are easily visible to the eye. There are different types of microscopes with different magnifications. One has a magnification factor of up to 200, which is often used in biology and medicine, the other magnifies no further than 'only' 100x, ideal for studying plants and insects. If you know what you want to magnify, you also know which microscope suits you/
