What is a Micro SD Card?
A Micro SD card represents a reduced version of the Secure Digital (SD) memory card. Due to its smaller size (15x11x1mm to 32x24x2.1mm), the card is highly suitable for use with more compact devices such as action cameras and certain video cameras. As with the SD card, the Micro version contains several contact points and can be connected to devices that are suitable for this purpose. The advantage of the smaller size is that with the use of a plug-in card, they can also be used in devices with the standard SD format. This way, a Micro SD can be used for almost all your equipment.
Storage capacity
As with the SD cards, the storage capacity varies greatly by type, but the Micro version also mainly use formats of between 8 GB and 256 GB. It is important to check that your device supports the chosen format, as models of 64gb or more (SDXC) cannot be used by all cameras. With the professional video cameras, larger and larger recordings are made, so the Micro SD cards grow in size and can lose more and more data. An advantage if you work with a compact camera or action cam is that when they support a large card, you can save a lot more files. Due to the rapid developments within the storage capacity of the cards, this will only grow in the coming years.
Speed classes
Over the years, the speed levels of Micro SD cards have risen to the level at which even for demanding Full HD camera’s, the data can be stored within moments. Speed class 10 is common nowadays, but in addition, the writing speed can be further specified. In the current 12 speed classes, video formats are differentiated from photo cameras. UHS (Ultra High Speed) can even reach transfer speeds of at least 50 MB per second. Also, always make sure that you use the suitable card for your (video) camera.
New functionalities
The development in the SD card field does not stand still, as can be seen in the arrival of Micro SD cards with the addition of WiFi. This way, photos and videos can be posted directly on social media or stored on an external hard drive.
