Buteo Photo Gear Floating Hide Grebe tent
The Buteo Photo Gear Floating Hide Grebe floating tent was developed by nature and wildlife photographers: extensively tested and adjusted where necessary before it was launched on the market. This floating hide is the latest Buteo project to make the range of professional wildlife and photography tents even more complete.
The floating tent is easy to set up: pump both air chambers full, then place the mounting plate (or both plates) in front of your tripod head, place the two storage bags, mount the frame in front of the tent and attach the tent fabric to the frame with the loops and Velcro. The flotation hut is ready for use.
Birds and mammals are generally very shy of people. By camouflaging yourself and your equipment with this floating photo tent, photographers can approach animals on the surface of the water or its edges without disturbing them. Since they no longer see you as a human being, they see no danger in it and you can often take beautiful photos at very close range.
The advantage of having your own mobile, floating hide is that you can take it with you anytime, anywhere and deploy it whenever an opportunity arises. The floating photo shelter is light and compact in size and can easily be taken to your favourite local pool, pond or lake if you go further away from home or even travel by plane.
Make sure you are well prepared before heading into the water:
- Keep it safe, make sure you know the depths of the water.
- What is your goal: which birds or mammals do you want to photograph.
- Are you allowed to enter the water at that spot? Ask the owner.
- What are the light conditions like there?
- Of course, it is advisable and wise to visit a nature reserve or pond first and prepare yourself well, so that you can get started with nature photography on water in a very focused and safe way.
Going into the water
If possible, find a spot that is not visible to people or wildlife so that you do not scare away any mammals or birds before you start. Prepare the floatation tent for dry land; place the camera and lens on the tripod head from the shore to keep it safe. Preferably enter the water using vegetation or an inlet. A reed bed or other riparian vegetation can be very useful for entering the water unseen.
The camouflage pattern of the tent itself is our well-known reed pattern. Additional camouflage can be attached, such as branches, reeds and so on. These extras can be attached using the strings. If you do this properly, your hide will blend in even more with the surroundings. The tent fabric itself is made of a strong material (polyester 150D) that lasts a long time. In rain/downpours, you will still stay dry thanks to the hydrostatic head of 2,500 mm.
Imagine: you are waiting in your floating tent, perfectly still, well prepared and ready for action! Suddenly a grebe, heron or beaver turns up just as you had hoped. It is wonderful when you are successful and your target species appears right in front of you. For wildlife photographers, nothing beats the feeling of getting beautiful shots of birds and mammals, making the wait worthwhile. That's when it's nice to be able to rely on your gear!
As you enter the tent, you can see the black coating on the inside, this is to make it as dark as possible. The viewing windows with an insect net give you enough visibility on all sides to survey your surroundings. One snoot/lens cover is included, giving you another viewing window (above the snoot). This snoot additionally camouflages your lens and protects it from water drops (same fabric as the tent), and is the same one used in the Buteo Mark II, Aquila Mark II and Falco series. So the snoot is interchangeable with these tents.
The tent also comes with two small bags for accessories, these can be removed if required. Two mounting plates are included (for the tripod head), you can mount and use both at the same time. The photo level at the back of the hide is even lower, so you are literally shooting at water level with your lens. At the front is a safety net that prevents anything from falling into the water.
Using a floating hide is completely different from any other 'normal' hide. You are in the water and have the ability to move yourself around to approach birds and mammals. However, it is advisable not to move too much, it is best to let birds or mammals come to you. Patience and practice is everything.
