Everything you need to know about softboxes
What is a softbox?
A softbox comprises a tent-like construction, with a transparent cloth (diffuser) at the front and reflective material on the inside. By positioning a flash at the back of the box the light is initially reflected inside prior to illuminating the subject via the transparent cloth. The soft light created by a softbox make them ideal for product, interior and portrait photography. With a softbox the light is focused in a controlled beam onto the subject, without having to take into account the angle at which the light is reflected, such as with a reflector.
Functionalities of a softbox
Portable flashes are secured in the softbox via a construction system, often comprising a clamp or elastic band. But there are also softboxes available that can be mounted directly onto the camera's flash. Both options create the same effect, but can however be used for different purposes. The smaller variants are often foldable and therefore are ideal to take with you on the go. Larger softboxes often require the support of a tripod to retain stability. The benefit of a larger softbox is that it can create softer, more natural light via the extra space within that the light can reflect off. When the light passes through the front onto the subject this ensures an even result that smooths out uneven colours. Take portrait photography, and the difference in skin tones and even colouring. One great tip to remember is not to place the softbox too far from the subject, to retain the softening effect.
Heat resistant
One plus point of using a softbox is that the material used can withstand high temperatures. Flashes with LED lights have more limited heat supply, but with other flashes the temperature escalates quickly. So, heat doesn't impact the softbox's effect or the ultimate illumination of the subject.
Various models
Softboxes come in all shapes and sizes. The box's shape plays an important role in the way in which light is cast onto the subject. Circular and square models create different reflection inside, creating a softer or harder light beam onto the subject. The high-end models are often octagonal or hexadecagonal, creating beautifully soft light on the subject. In addition, these models create more natural reflections in a person's eyes.
