The Canon EF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM III is suitable for outdoor, nature and sports applications, and combines a favorite super telephoto focal length with a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture. Version III of this lens has a lighter design, an advanced optical layout and updated processing options. The fast maximum aperture allows extensive control over the depth of field for isolating subjects with selective focus and also works well in difficult lighting conditions. Both Super UD and Fluorite elements are used in the optical design to reduce color edges and chromatic aberrations for high brightness and color accuracy. Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coatings have been applied to individual elements to suppress lens flare and ghosting for more contrast and color neutrality when working with backlighting.

In addition to its optical Features, this 400 mm f/2.8 is also characterized by its advanced five stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes for different shooting applications. Complementing the handling is an advanced ring type USM that provides fast, silent and accurate autofocus performance, along with permanent manual overrunning. A customizable electronic focusing ring further contributes to precise manual focus by offering three focusing sensitivity levels for different applications. Moreover, this lens is suitable for use in harsh environmental conditions and has a removable rotating tripod collar that benefits working on a tripod or monopod.
