There are many different kinds of sports. That's why sports photography can't be explained in one sentence. In sports photography, it's all about capturing the right moment. Whether that's capturing a race car, an impressive goal or relaying an emotion: the moment usually only lasts a second or even less.
The enthusiastic sports photographer has to be able to control the shutter speed and aperture, and of course the telelens and a quality tripod shouldn't be missing from the selection. However, having good equipment doesn't mean you produce good photos. There is one common denominator between all sports: speed. You could choose to freeze-frame an instance of a movement, or clearly depict the whole movement.
