Softbox

A softbox is a hood with a reflective inside. It causes the flashlight to be spread and egalised. The front cover acts like a diffuser to perfectly illuminate your subject. With a softbox you can shed very controlled soft light on a subject. This is especially useful with portrait photography. The soft light reduces unevenness on the skin of the model, and hard shadows are prevented.

How does a softbox work?

You can place a softbox on a studio flash. Through the silver inside, the flashlight is evenly distributed over a larger area. Because the light is spread, the light is much more natural. The size of the softbox determines the softness of the light. The larger the softbox, the softer the light will be. Soft light has the advantage that the light sections of a subject are much less reflective. This keeps the details more visible and prevents a large white surface.

Softbox or octabox

A softbox has a square or rectangular shape in most cases. An octabox, on the other hand, is octagonal. The shape of the box determines the shape of the reflection. Some photographers therefore prefer an octabox because it gives a round reflection in, for example, the eyes of a model. This is more natural because it more corresponds to the reflection of the sun.
