The Canon EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM is tailored to the versatility of the EOS 80D and provides powerful AF performance in movies and photos. The lens has a focal range to make both wide-angle and close-up shots. The EF-S 18-135mm IS USM is the first Canon lens with Nano USM-focus technology for smooth, silent AF in video s and impressive AF speeds in photos.
Nano USM is a newly developed lens drive system that combines the silent and smooth operation of an STM (Stepping Motor) with the speed of Canon's ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) system. The speed of the focus ring in the EF-S 18-135mm IS USM is up to 2.5 times higher in wide angle and up to 4.3 times higher in telephoto compared with the previous model, the EF-S 18-135mm IS STM.
The Nano USM unit has a flexible metal housing and a ceramic power element. By applying a change of the frequency and phase of the high-frequency voltage on the ceramic power element, control of both the direction of rotation as the rotation speed is achieved. This combination of frequency and phase control, together with a control algorithm provides for a drive system of lenses that is perfect for photography and video recordings.
