Description
Canon EOS C500 Mark II
The Canon EOS C500 Mark II is a professional full frame video camera. The full frame CMOS sensor features an effective resolution of 18.69 Megapixels. This results in full frame 5.9K video output. Plus, there is the crop function for Super 35 and Super 16 image formats, with high resolution retention. The C500 Mark II comes with a Canon EF mount and features an interchangeable lens mount system, allowing you to swap the mount for an optional Cinema Locking EF or PL mount. This significantly broadens the number of lenses you can use with the camera. The sensor has more than 15 stops of dynamic range and supports Dual Pixel autofocus, plus the camera uses a DIG!C DV 7 chip for image processing.
The camera allows internal RAW shooting in 12 or 10-bit using the Canon Cinema RAW Light codec. You can also capture images in 10-bit with the XF-AVC codec. Internal recording is done via the two CFexpress card slots. Any 8-bit proxy recording in the XF-AVC codes and JPEGs can be captured to an SD card via the built-in SD card slot. There is support for a variety of gamma settings, including Canon Log 2 and Log 3. Along with support for a variety of colour gamuts, including Cinema BT.2020, DCI-P3 and legacy BT.709. LUT importing is also supported, of course. The camera supports four channels of 24-bit, 48 kHz linear PCM audio recording.
Sensor
The full frame CMOS sensor captures low-noise images with more than 15 stops of dynamic range. BT-2020's specifications are surpassed by the range of colours offered. Plus, images are captured in a variety of image formats, including DCI-4K, UHD and Anamorphic Widescreen. In addition to recording with the full screen size of the sensor, you can use a variety of spherical and anamorphic glass. It is designed to capture Super 35mm and Super 16mm using appropriate cropping modes, lens mounts and adapters.
DIGIC DV7 Image Processor
The EOS C500 Mark II uses the DIGIC DV 7 image processor that collates the extensive raw data from the 5.9K sensor. The DIGIC DV 7 enables high frame rate recording, Dual Pixel Auto Focus, Canon RAW Light Recording, HDR (PQ and HLG) output, electronic image stabilisation, proxy recording and oversampling processing. With the fast DIGIC DV 7, the camera can simultaneously record 2K proxy files as XF-AVC 2K 4:2:0 8-bit to an SD card, while saving Cinema RAW Light files (5.9K, 4K recording or 2K cropping) to the internal CFexpress cards.
Interchangeable lens mounts
The C500 Mark II comes as standard with a Canon EF lens mount. It works with an electronic iris control for various Canon EF, ENG and Canon Cine-Servo lenses. An optional EF Cine Lock mount also features Canon's electronic EF protocols and eliminates tolerance when mounting EF lenses on your camera. An industry-standard PL lens mount is also available, allowing virtually any PL lens mount lens to be used on your C500 Mark II. The lens mounts can be changed by you, and each mount comes with a set of shims for proper depth adjustment. An optional B4 lens adapter is available for the PL or EF lens mount; this adapter allows you to use ENG-style lenses with B4 mounts on the C500 Mark II.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF with support for Touch AF and Face Detection AF
DAF technology takes advantage of the fact that each pixel in the camera's CMOS sensor is configured with two photodiodes. Two independent image signals can then be detected and compared using phase difference to provide autofocus with compatible lenses. DAF can survey the scene and recognise not only whether the subject is in focus or not, but in which direction (near or far) and by how much. This allows AF lenses to respond when needed, so they don't have to "hunt" for the right focus.
DAF technology can also be used to focus manually. Focus information is translated into an on-screen guide that transfers focus and the person's direction of movement to the operator to achieve sharpness. Once sharp focus is achieved, the indicator turns green providing a clear status signal.
You can also use DAF and the LCG with the camera's touchscreen to simulate a focus-pull with preset locations. After configuring two separate focus locations on the screen, the camera's command dial can be used to toggle between the two focus points. The focus stretching effect can be fine-tuned by adjusting the AF tracking speed and response.
