Tip 1: Create a creepy Halloween portrait

Halloween is the ideal time to experiment with light and shadow in portraits. Use a candle, torch or flash to cast hard shadows on your model’s face. This can create a truly eerie look! Also try placing a colour filter, such as a red or green gel, in front of your light source. It instantly gives your photo a completely different feel. You can also use face paint and make-up to make your model look even more mysterious.

Tip 2: Find locations with a spooky atmosphere

When you want to shoot a Halloween image, location is crucial. Abandoned buildings, crumbling castles or dense forests are perfect for a spine-chilling shoot. But also consider less obvious places, such as an alleyway lit with a brightly coloured tube light. That way you create a scene straight out of Stranger Things! Is your location not mysterious enough yet? Then try a smoke machine.

Tip 3: Use a slow shutter speed

Using a slow shutter speed in a dark environment lets you create a thrilling effect. Mist in a nature area looks more ominous, and when someone moves through the frame, an almost ghostly effect appears. This works best at dusk or in a dark room. When shooting with a slow shutter speed, we do recommend using a tripod to avoid unintentional motion blur.

Making a video? Then experiment with the pace of your footage while editing. Slowed-down or slow-motion video can create an ominous atmosphere, just like a slow shutter speed in photography, but you can also opt for sped-up footage to build tension.

Tip 4: Play with depth of field and bokeh in your Halloween photo

To create a frightening atmosphere, you can also play with depth of field. With a wide aperture (a small f-number, such as f/1.4 to f/2.8), you can blur the background of your photo and focus all attention on your subject. This works especially well for portraits or close-ups.

Prefer a dreamy or surreal effect? Then experiment with bokeh. If you have small lights in the background, such as candles or street lamps, you can create a dreamy bokeh effect. Here too, you can opt for coloured light sources, such as an LED light panel. It gives your image a completely different atmosphere!

Tip 5: Get creative in post-processing

When creating Halloween images, post-processing is where the magic really comes to life. For example, lower the saturation of your image to create cool tones. This produces a colder atmosphere that can build a sense of suspense. You can also deepen the shadows in a portrait by increasing the contrast.

You can also give your image an old-school horror feel by adding noise or grain in your edit. Take it even further by shooting with an analogue camera! By then digitising the images, you can still make adjustments in post-processing.

Tip 6: Choose the right gear

Halloween is all about darkness and mystery, so it’s important to match your gear to that atmosphere! That’s why we recommend fast (prime) lenses. These lenses let in plenty of light, so you can shoot sharp images even in dark conditions. Is it actually too bright outside? Then consider using an ND filter. And of course various lights, such as a continuous lighting kit or tube light, come in handy to keep control over the light.

You can also use a creative lens for your Halloween images. A fisheye lens gives your images a surreal, distorted effect! It’s great for both a suspenseful portrait and a photo of a creepy location.
